Oh No! That Netflix Password Crackdown Worked

24 Oct 2023

You know that Netflix password crackdown? It worked… We all shuddered when Netflix announced it was cracking down on password sharing. With more streaming providers than there are hours in the day, it’s no surprise that many of us have been piggybacking off shared accounts. And who among us hasn’t received a text from friends or family asking us to share a precious password? Netflix has always been one of the most expensive streaming services, so when it announced back in May that it was putting a stop to multiple users sharing passwords, it caused more than a few budget-conscious viewers to wince in pain.

But here’s the thing: the tactic worked.

New Users Spike Following Netflix Password Crackdown

Announcing its quarterly results last week, Netflix revealed it had added some 8.8 million new users since the crackdown was launched. That’s despite the fact that Netflix prices are on the increase globally, with the streaming provider looking to move viewers away from basic subscription packages to more expensive options.

Users who share their accounts outside of their household are now slugged an extra $7.99 per member – meaning you’ll need to pony up some extra cash if you want to keep everyone happy. Rival streamer Disney+ has started to follow suit, with the company announcing in September it was starting to take action against password re-sharing in Canada. While that’s bad news for household budgets and hip pockets alike, it makes sense from the perspective of providers locked in a heated battle for market share – and dealing with the fall-out of Hollywood’s latest writers’ strike. “As the service’s subscriber base plateaus in more countries, Netflix will focus on moving price-sensitive freeloaders to its cheaper ad-supported plan,” Insider Intelligence analyst Ross Benes said of the password crackdown back in July.
