Takedown Notice? YouTube Eraser Aims To Delete Them
Index
Ever had a takedown notice? The new YouTube eraser should make them a thing of the past.
That’s because YouTube has released a new and improved eraser tool that allows creators to remove any copyrighted material from their videos without impacting the rest of the audio.
“Good news creators: our updated Erase Song tool helps you easily remove copyright-claimed music from your video (while leaving the rest of your audio intact),” said YouTube’s chief executive, Neal Mohan, on X.
The new YouTube eraser tool allows content creators to effectively ‘silence’ copyrighted material within their videos without having to resort to deleting the video entirely.
It had been a beta feature, as reported by tech website The Verge, but was plagued by inaccuracy – a fact acknowledged in the announcement video by YouTube themselves.
Now the company has leaned into a new and improved “AI-powered algorithm” to better identify copyrighted material and help video-makers deal with takedown requests more easily.
It’s a big win for creators, who often had to delete popular videos due to the presence of snippets of copyrighted material.
YouTube still claims the AI isn’t foolproof and that some song-removal attempts may not work with the upgraded YouTube eraser tool.
When that occurs, users can simply mute songs or sounds within the video to prevent any takedown attempts.
It’ll be interesting to see if TikTok follows suit, given they’ve had their own highly publicised issues with major artists. (Paging Taylor Swift, whose songs were unavailable on the platform for almost two months over a licensing dispute).
YouTube has almost 2.5 billion active monthly users and more than 80 million paid subscribers.
No doubt more than a few of them will be thrilled with the latest update – and less inclined to hit that ‘delete’ button.
