The Humane AI Pin is almost here. What does it mean for all of us? Let’s find out…

Humane is preparing to officially launch its much-hyped AI Pin this week.

If all goes to plan, it will completely change the way we interact with the world.

We first discussed this groundbreaking product in late July, while it was still in test mode.

To recap, the Humane AI Pin is a small, square-shaped wearable device with incredible functionality – and the company (led by former Apple employees) has its sights set on dominating the smartphone segment.

The device’s major point of difference is that it’s screenless – yep, no screen! – with AI-driven tech designed to effortlessly integrate into your daily routine. It’s like having a tiny companion following you wherever you go – and a super helpful one at that.

What happens when you do need visuals? Well, the pin has this amazing ‘laser ink display’ functionality built in. So this thing literally beams a display right into the palm of your hand.

Humane AI Pin Full of Fun Features

“It (the AI Pin) interacts with the world the way you interact with the world; hearing what you hear, seeing what you see while being privacy first and safe and completely fading into the background of your life,” said Humane co-founder, Imran Chaudhri, as part of a TED talk in which the product was unveiled (see below).

Leading features include real-time translation capabilities and a function called ‘catch me up’, which sifts through a user’s inbox to contextualise key updates.

Another interesting feature of the tech is its ability to relay nutritional information about everyday foodstuffs on demand – tailored to a user’s dietary requirements – although its accuracy has been questioned. That’ll be handy if it can get past its supposed teething problems!

Humane is preparing to take orders for the AI Pin on 16 November (US time), with shipping set to commence in early 2024.

Goodbye, Smartphones?

The big question to come out of the impending launch is whether the device is a genuine threat to the smartphone – or will this be a novelty product that fails to stick?

The more pertinent question might be whether the Humane AI Pin has the functionality required to directly compete with the smartphone.

Do we want to be forced to choose one or the other?

Then, a whole lot more questions arise supposing the AI Pin does take off and eventually erode our thirst for screens. These are just a few thought-starters:

  • Will people once again converse at the dinner table?
  • Will we sleep better as a result of less doom scrolling?
  • Are once-distracted gym-goers suddenly going to witness rapidly increased efficiency?
  • Will people have to revert to taking lighters to concerts for those singalong, ‘lights out’ moments?
  • And what would our world of influencers do without selfies?!

It does seem like it’s only a matter of time before wearable tech is the norm. The recent introduction of Meta smart glasses points to the direction we’re headed in.
